Ziva Is Born!

On July 25, 2019, at 5:45 p.m., our daughter, Ziva Nuryah, was born at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital in San Diego. She weighed 8lbs 2.3oz and was 20.1in tall. The vaginal delivery went smoothly. Mother and daughter are healthy.

The official date of birth was actually July 29th and the first baby is usually rather late, which is why we carelessly booked a pregnancy photo shoot on July 24th. The photographer, a Mexican friend of ours, looked at Anja’s belly and said: “The baby is coming soon!”

Later that evening, when Anja got up from her bed to go to the toilet again, a gush of water poured over her pants and on the floor. “Christof, I think my water broke!” Anja called, which caused Christof to run back and forth, slightly panicking. “Relax”, Anja said, “the baby is not coming anytime soon – I am not even in labor!”. Shortly after, we sat in the car and drove towards the border, because Ziva would be born in the States. Thank the Lord it was evening on a work day, so the queue was short and we didn’t even have to wait for half an hour.

After the nurses made sure that it was amniotic fluid, they started to induce. It took three pills before the contractions finally started – six hours passed

between taking each pill. Anja wanted to see how long she would last without an epidural, but eventually asked for one, which made it possible for her to sleep for three hours. When the gynecologist woke Anja up, it was time to give birth.

Ziva was born with the umbilical cord around her neck and subsequently swallowed some amniotic fluid that had to be taken out of her mouth, whereupon she protested loudly. When she finally lay on Anja’s chest, she was very calm and looked into her eyes. A little miracle and a big gift from God, our Father!
